ELTON JOHN/EMPTY SKY DJLPS 403 (-69) UK

His debute LP and though it includes some strong melodies and lyrics of the kind that would show up on later million sellers, there are differences. From the next album, which also became his big breakthrough, Gus Dudgeon would handle the production while this was produced by his friend and DJM staff member Steve Brown. You get a feeling of trembling and searching for form and solid ground here. Sometimes a little jazzy and at parts almost prog or even psych. The trials aren't very obvious, but it's clear he's testing. From the next LP and on he would eventually turn into a well oiled hit machine selling 250+ million records, but not yet. If this had been a "one off" it would probably have been forgotten by now. That said I must add I like it - although more insecure and naive than anything he did later it's also more naked and honest. Later Elton John is a product, an object, here I see more of the person. It was also released in mono. I've heard that once and I'm pretty sure it was a reduction of the stereo tapes. The stereo has been re-issued many times through the years. If You want to buy a first press and can't check the matrix remember following features : The vinyl is thick and unflexible. Label has "33 1/3 RPM" in larger letters above rec number to the right. Original cover was a structured fold out with only the mono number top right back cover. All stereos had a sticker covering that, but it was badly glued and is often missing. First issued in US 1975 (MCA-2130)(SYSÖ*)
