TOM JONES/ALONG CAME JONES LK4693 (-65) UK MONO
Listening to his debute it's amazing how little he changed the following three or four decades. The formula is already there - mix of R&B, pop and ballads - the arrangements and the powerful voice. Maybe there was no reason for change since it proved successful already from the start. What makes this more appealing than some of his later stuff is the youthful attack. The control and spruceness that made him a hit machine isn't there yet and on a few tracks he gives it all. Here are good versions of "Memphis, Tennessee" and "I Need Your Loving". Recorded and issued in UK as 16 track in mono only. US 12 track release on Parrot (PA/PAS 7104). First press had ridged label, the one shown here is somewhat later. (MÖRS*)(TÖJX*)

It may be worthwhile to mention that engineer Bill Price is the same guy that later recorded and mixed The Clash' classic album London Calling & also the Sex Pistol's Bullocks album (together with Chris Thomas). And today in 2012, he still maintains a busy work schedule recording but mostly mixing. He is one of the greatest British recording engineer's and mixing masters in my book, I'm willing to bet this record sounds excellent.
SvaraRaderaGood You mention that. Recording engineers are often the unsung heroes of the studios. I believe a fine mix with the right atmosphere can create a hit of almost anything, while a bad one can destroy the finest intentions. I always thought Pistols' was a master-work. Listening to that and knowing what the crew had to deal with the outcome is amazing.
SvaraRaderaAlso this one is absolutely perfect as You suspected.
