PETER GABRIEL/ "SCRATCH" CDS 4013 (-78) UK

Together with the debute remaining my favorite of all his solo issues. Even if later efforts also had strong song writing and those special vocals, this sounds more "real" to me. From next album and on there would be an increasing use of sythesizers for backing, including drum and bass sounds. Synths are utilized here (Larry Fast), but so far only for filling or various effects. I get real drums (Jerry Marotta) and bass (Tony Levin) and amazing guitars from Sid McGinnis and Robert Fripp. In fact I see this as Fripp's album as much as Gabriel's. By producing, co-arranging and co-writing one of the songs - "Exposure" - he could as well have shared the front. He is the sovereign mood guitarist, here proven by solos on "On The Air" and "White Shadow". With the latter he's not only enhancing the mood, but lifting the whole number to a much higher level. Even if you for some reason don't like the album as a whole, that song and solo makes it worthwhile. First US on Atlantic (SD 19181). Premiere UK had label as shown here, glossy cover and picture/lyric insert. (GYÄ*) (CÄX*)

  1. Good old Gabriel. This is great mix the underground with mainstream music. That's why those two first records are still unique.
