BONZO DOG BAND/KEYNSHAM LBS 83290 (-69) UK
The band's fourth album and last for UK Liberty. Albeit it has the same disposition as the former ones - a mix of pastiches and melodic pop - there's another atmosphere, a mood change where some of the innocent jolliness has been replaced by social awareness. Fewer teen squanderings and more grown-up ponderings. I mostly fancy their earlier stuff - the "everything goes" attitude, the sometimes unintelligible outcome and overall amateuristc approach. This is a lot tidier - the song structures are more regular, the arrangements more devised and the performaces more rehearsed. There's a lot to like on it - a couple of very catchy tunes, some of their best vocals and smashing audio. Favorite track - "You Done My Brain In". I've seen many regard this as the band's best effort, probably because it's easier to access, but I miss some of the former insanity and rather listen to "Gorilla" or "A Doughnut In Granny's Greenhouse". First US on Imperial (LP-12457). Vinyl re-issues on Sunset (SLS 50375) and UA (LBR 1041). US 1993 CD on One Way Records (S21 17432). Premiere UK had label as shown here and structured fold/out cover with silver paper plate glued on front. (BÖGÄ*) (XLÄ*)
