THE BYRDS/BYRDMANIAX S 64389 (-71) UK

A band I first got aquainted with through the debute LP and the cover version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" and then remained a faithful buyer of their albums up till the bitter end. There seems to be some kind of consensus it's the sixties recordings that made them the all time classic rock band they are honored as today, but even if the latter LP:s aren't as strong they all have at least some parts making them rewarding for benificial old fans. Like this one. As the story goes recorded under a lot of stress in the midst of exhaustive touring and left more or less unfinished by the band, whereafter producer Terry Melcher tried to finish the job by overdubbing brass, strings and choires...without the members approval. To me a small disappointment after the strong studio-live combo "Untitled", but with at least a couple of good moments making it worthwhile. "Glory Glory" good repetitive gospel pop and "I Wanna Grow Up To Be A Politician" funny and very catchy. That's it for me. The rest ok I guess even if they don't make my ossicles tremble with excitement. Audio on this UK is strong and clear, just a little too generous with the reverb. Nevertheless it is a Byrds original and that could never be a bad thing so a keeper it is. Issued all over the world on vinyl, 8-track, cassette and CD. Premiere US on Columbia (KC 30640). US 2000 CD on Columbia (CK 65848) came with three previously unissued bonus tracks. First UK had label as shown here and glossy fold/out cover with CBS ad inner. (XYGZ*)
