DAVID BOWIE/CHANGESONEBOWIE RS 1055 (-76) UK
A very good greatest hits collection containing a couple of top numbers from the period 1969-76. You can always squabble about tracking on issues like this, but with an artist of Bowie's magnitude a single compilation LP could never be more than spot-check anyway. All cuts but one picked from already big selling albums. What makes it special for me is the original take of "John I'm Only Dancing" - here for the first time on LP. The song existed in three different versions at this time - the 1972 original, the 1973 "sax-version" and the 1974 dicso version. The original only surfaced on 45 between September 1972 and April 1973, after which it was replaced by the sax version, while the disco variation stayed unreleased until 1979 when it was put on a 45 and also figured on the 1980 "Bowie Rare" and the 1981 "Changestwobowie". There's also been more remixes and/or remakes than I can keep track of. To make it even more complicated the initial copies of this compilation came with the sax version which soon was changed to the 1972 original recording. This copy is the slightly later with the original version which I prefer, not only because it's the first and here untainted by remakes, but it's also the one I had on single back then and therefore a good help for reminiscing. Issued and reissued on every possible format all over the world through the years. UK 1990 EMI reisssue as "Changesbowie" either on 2xLP (DBTV1) or CD (CDDBTV1) came with eighteen tracks. Early UK had label as shown here and thin matt stickered cover with "Important Notice" inner. (PKÅ*)
