BACKTRACK 3 - WHO/HENDRIX 2407 003 (-70) UK

First two in the Backtrack serie had a number of rare cuts from known groups and others from odd artists. This doesn't look as exciting at first glance. All tracks had previously been on original LP:s or compilations. Still for the out-and-out fans of the groups or those captivated by rock history it has a few interesting features. All cuts on it are true stereo, or at least claimed to be - I've listened closely and guarantee all but one or two not clear enough to distinguish. On the Hendrix side "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze" and "The Wind Cries Mary" uses the US Reprise versions, I'm not sure where the rest comes from. The Who numbers are earlier unreleased stereo versions on LP for the first time. A few of them differs from the monos. I especially like "Disguises", "Run Run Run" and "I'm A Boy" on here - even if it's the same crappy original recordings, the stereo mixes are more revealing. Not issued in US. First UK had matt label as shown here and thin glossy cover. (XXÖ*) (SÄM*)(WÖH*)(JHÄ*)(TRÄC*)

  1. Stone free only exists in mono (and of course the lofi fake stereo which has dogged pretty much every release the last 40 years).

I'm guessing CYSM is also mono or fake stereo here, even though a true stereo mix exists.

Happy Jack is also a mono-only track.

Is "So Sad About Us" in true stereo here (would surprise me)? I think it only appeared in true stereo on the US Decca LP at the time.

  2. Thanks Prof. I knew I could trust You on this. SSBU is the most lo-fi here, very flat and probably a fake. So they had a couple of true stereos and couldn't resist filling out with fakes to get a full album. IMO still worth it if you don't pay too much :)

  3. I payed 5€ for it :) here's brief rundown of the mixes: Substitute fake stereo, Disguises stereo, Run run stereo, I'm a boy stereo, Whiskey man fake stereo, Happy jack fake stereo, So sad narrow (or fake?) stereo, Hey joe stereo, I dont' live today stereo, Purple haze stereo, Can you see me fake stereo, Wind cries Mary stereo, Stone free fake stereo.
    hope this helps

  4. Thanks Doc, sounds about right :) I found mine just a week ago for $7, but could have paid more. I'm after the whole serie and still miss a few.

  5. I was pretty sure I had one more from that series but it was probably a false memory... I once had the Hendrix Are You Experienced Backtrack LP which was supposed to be mono but it is a mish-mash of mono, stereo and fake stereo... as you already know :)
    cheers

  6. Yup I got that one too, may be a mishmash but still better than the UK mono. The ones I lack at the moment are no.s 6 & 7. I'm sure they will show up in some shop here eventually. The most important quality in a record collector is patience and I got a lot of that :)

  7. D'uh, of course Substitute is mono-only as well! Thanks doc, for clearing it up. It's amazing what a mess Track had made of their tape catalog at this point.

I have the Arthur Brown one in this series, and considering the recording quality it sounds pretty swell. A much more affordable alternative to the original Track.

    1. I like the four with "various artists" best. Some very hard to find single tracks, most of them having original mixes.

    2. I thought I had the various artists volume, but it has vanished somehow. As for the Arthur Brown LP, I didn't know it was part of the Backtrack series as well... nice alternative indeed, thanks for the heads-up Prof.! :)

  9. I had it on an Italian budget priced LP in the 70's, and now on a Swedish reprint :) cheers

  10. What Swedish re-print? Naturally there's quite a few of them here but didn't know some had that mix. Got any details?

    SvaraRadera
  11. I should have said 'what I believe is a Swedish pressing', and which of course is not :) it' s a German repress from 1971 on Karussel (Gold Serie 2499006), entitled 'The Jimi Hendrix Experience', sorry for the mistake!

  12. No problem. I know wich one it is and will pick up the next copy I see. Looking forward to hear another mix than UK first press :)

    1. then I guess the best copy of the alternate mix could be either the Backtrack one or the double AYE/ABAL on Track from the early 70's...

  13. The alternative mix first appeared on the original German version from 1968, then later on almost every European release (incl. all UK reissues). The orig UK Track and all the Barclay variations of this album where the only place in this continent to hear the true stereo mix up until the early nineties when we got the correct mix on CD.

    SvaraRadera
  14. So the first UK stereo is the rarer one on vinyl? The best one for the alternate would be the German then, since that was first...or the UK 1970 Track. I've always had the UK first and never knew there was an alternate one. Can't wait to hear the differences :)

The funny thing is, nobody knows the whereabouts of this mix. Eddie Kramer doesn't remember preparing it.

  16. Those were the days :) I guess the artists weren't the only ones potted.
