PUGH ROGEFELDT/PUGH (Ja, dä ä dä!) MLP 15.336 (-69) SWEDEN
Swedish singer/songwriter who for this debute album got help from prog guitarist/bassist/keyboardist Georg "Jojje" Wadenius (who later would play with Blood, Sweat & Tears, Solar Plexus, Made In Sweden, Saturday Night Live Band and work as session musician for a large number of US artists) and Janne Karlsson (jazz fusion drummer, today most known for his collaboration with Bo Hansson in Hansson & Karlsson). Everything was set for an ordinary singer/songwriter effort, but turned out as something completely different. Rogefeldt was unknown and unexperienced at the time and very surprised when producer Anders Burman told him he got a contract for an LP. Date was set, but preparations didn't lead anywhere so arrangements, performance and some of the composing was made up as they went along in the studio. Some of the numbers have common song patterns and it's clear they follow it most of the time, but there's also lots of improvisations and free form performance, especially the guitars. Too my taste it's a gem with a perfect combination of melodic and experimental, topped with some very cheeky psych guitars. If you're into that and don't mind the Swedish lyrics it's well worth a spin. US 1970 release on Vault (SLP-137) used the same tapes, but had titles and lyrics translated to English on cover and label. CD 1990 on WEA (9031-70887-2) and 2004 on Warner (5050467-4110-2-9). First Swedish had blue label as shown here and laminated fold/out cover with four pages of lyrics and pictures inside. Here's youtube links to three of the songs - "Här Kommer Natten" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkOMDvtVhZ4 , "Jag Sitter Och Gungar" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEM_JsN-Y5U , "Love Love Love" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGgICkenjvM .
