THE MORAY EELS EAT THE HOLY MODAL ROUNDERS EKS-74026 (-68) US

The Swedish left wing prog movement, existing from the late sixties through the seventies, is today considered a separate genre in music. In a way it was, because of its persistence and domestic popularity, but the ball was already rolling in the mid sixties and the main inspiration came from US folk/psych groups like Fugs and Holy Modal Rounders. The right-on almost amateuristic approach to music, free form recordings and political signature that later developed into a unique Scandinavian blend was done by them years earlier. Still a teen back then I was like a spunge and absorbed everything new and exciting. For a while I participated in demonstrations, house occupations and sit-ins. We read texts by Marx, Sartre and Jerry Rubin, protested against capitalism and listened to LP:s like this. Long before the net and with Swedish television only having one channel, records and books gave an opportunity to connect with the world outside and in this case bring the blossoming New York folk/psych scene into my boy room. It had everything I wanted at the time - offensive, discourteous and very funny. Not very melodic or skillfully performed, but perfect for the young liberating mind. Listening today I get a lot of good memories. Although the music sounds dated and the message been corrupted, packaged and sold years ago it takes me back to that one opening in time when everything seemed possible. Maybe you had to be there to appreciate this kind of collected lunacy today, but to us who was it still means something. First UK on Elektra in both mono and stereo (EKL 4026/EKS 74026) . Premiere US had label as shown here and glossy sleeve. (ÄZC*) (YZÄ*)
