DAVE EDMUNDS/ROCKPILE SLRZ 1026 (-71) UK

Edmunds' first solo album after Love Sculpture, not to be confused with his involvement in the much later "Rockpile" group efforts. Most of it is more or less faithful re-makes of US hits from the fifties and sixties. Maybe not the most exciting LP in my collection, but the mixing and audio makes it a great listening experience. Self-produced with help from engineers Ralph Downs and Kingsley Ward. He does a great part of the instruments and vocals himself or together with former Love Sculpture band mate John Williams. A few of the tracks also have guest musicians as Amen Corner's Andy Fairweather-Low and session man B.J. Cole. The top number is undoubtely "I Hear You Knocking". Initially a 1970 single for MAM records and world wide blockbuster with #1 in UK and #4 in US. The first '45 version was mono, the one on here is a differently mixed stereo version. Ususally I'd go for the mono all the way, but this two-channel variation really gets me going. It doesn't take away anything from the original, only making it better - wider, richer and just a little bit softer. For once I actually prefer a later stereo re-make before the original mono. Don't know of any original US issues. On CD 2001 (Repertoire Records REP 4966) with six bonus tracks, among them a '45 mix of "I Hear You Knocking". Premiere UK had label as shown here and thin matt cover. (RÄZ*) (DÄWÄ*)
