THE SHANES/SHANEGANG SSX 1020 (-65) MONO SWEDEN

For more background check my post on the debute. The groups first incarnation was formed above the artic circle with all members from the northern mining districts, a heritage reflected in early sound and performance - hard hitting garage r&b with steady beat and simple lyrics. After first album they recruited singer Lennart Grahn and went on as a five piece. Grahn was a big Mose Allison fan and his influence on the group led to a softer sound, continuing with r&b but also adding country and pop. Original founder Staffan Berggren didn't like the change and quit 1965, replaced by organist and songwriter Kitt Sundquist from Stockholm. The new poppier band proved very successful in the south with a number of high charting singles and albums on the Scandinavian lists. I grew up in the north and saw all that - silly pop songs, schlager production and Stockholm fame - as a betrayal. To us all Stockholmers were sissys and now our favorite group, the toughest of them all, was down there being soft in the big city. I'm not that categorical today, but still don't like their later stuff. This second album shows the groups transition. There's three Mose Allison covers and a few of the cuts are melodic pop, but most of it has a remaining garage feeling with rattling guitars, steady beat and simple riffs. Best tracks - an Animals style "Blue Feeling", a cover of Little Richards "Jenny Jenny" and the self-penned "She's Ashamed Of Me". Recorded and issued in mono only. First press had label as shown here, thick unflexible vinyl and thin fully laminated cover. Second issue 1967 on HMV with black cover. (SCÄ*)(ÖGÄ*) (XHÄ*)(CCÖ*)
