GRATEFUL DEAD/AMERICAN BEAUTY FL-2022 (-70) TAIWAN

It's always fun to get alternate versions of renowned albums that sold millions world wide. Taiwan pressed lots of US and UK recordings in the sixties and seventies on a number of different labels. Today they're called bootlegs and counterfeits, but totally legit there and then and even if frowned upon by leading record companies there wasn't much they could do about it. Most issues were done by copying a regular LP to a master and on to stampers for pressing of further albums, although exemples are mentioned where the manufacturers had access to actual masters. Sound quality varied from awful to very good. Matrix numbers could be anything from domestic figures to the ones appearing on American or Australian first press. Covers were recycled and mostly of bad quality. They were made for Taiwan, but also exported to surrounding countries and sold to US soldiers living at the Okinawa base. Original prices ranged from $0.30 up to a dollar each. The copy shown here sounds surprisingly good. Maybe not up there with the absolutely best UK or US pressings, but certainly sufficient. Matrix numbers are etched US type WS-1893 39804-1-1/ WS-1893 39805-1-2. Legit or not - good audio combined with an odd beautiful label design makes it a keeper. (ÄZC*) (ÄZÄ*)
