While the first "Golden Records" had his single issues from 1956-57, this Volume 2 covers all '45 only cuts 1958-59. The early ones were all killers - direct recordings with lots of presence almost making it personal. Just a few years later something else was going on in the studios. Most tracks comes through slightly more elaborated and are mixed differently - making them more packaged products than lucky snap-shots. The songs are still good, his voice great and the mono audio remarkable, but they lack some of the immediate connection you get with the earliest ones. For some artists arrangements and studio make-ups are crucial to get an attractive result. Elvis didn't need much reinforcement back then. His power and vocal skills were self-evident and showed better right-on with simplest possible backing.
