EDWIN STARR/WAR & PEACE STML 11171 (-70) UK

For background please check post on his second album "25 Miles". An exemple how the sixties Motown sound with perky melodic hits and romantic duets mutated into seventies power soul.  Part of this LP sounds rather run of the mill Motown, but some of the tracks stand out having very intense vocals and heavier production. Especially the song "War" - earlier recorded by Temptations on the "Psychedelic Shack" album. Even if I prefer Temptations more groovy version, this had the power and would be trendsetting the following years. The vocal technique wasn't totally new, it'd been accomplished way back by artists as James Brown and Wilson Pickett. So it was a cover, performed by one of Motown's then medium stars, in a manner perfected by others years earlier. Still it sounded all fresh, became a world wide block buster, sold millions and even fortyfour years later considered a classic. It seems they got everything right - catchy anti-war lyrics, clean production, power vocals and danceable beat. The rest of the album is pretty good too without being special, most of it melodic up-tempo not far from the Four Tops style three years earlier. Favorite tracks except "War" - "Adios Senorita" and "She Sould Have Been Home". Premiere US on Gordy (GS 948). First UK had label as shown here and laminated flip/back cover. (TÖMÖ*)
