STEELEYE SPAN/COMMONERS CROWN CHR 1071 (-75) UK

The first of four consecutive albums whith a far more adventurous approach to the folky elements - followed by "All Around My Hat", "Rocket Cottage" and Storm Force Ten" - that would lead to a period of recognition outside the traditional fan base and bigger sales. In a way this is the most experimerntal of the four, not only having more accentuated rock drum/bass but also prog episodes with rythmic gaming as in "Long Larkin" or the tranformance of a classical violin piece into a perky fiddle tune as in "Bach Goes To Limerick". The final "New York Girls" - with non other than Peter Sellers on ukulele - has traditional origin and performance, but the slightly odd production makes it irresistable...at least to me. Favorite tracks - the ones mentioned above and "Little Sir Hugh". US issue with same label, number and sleeve design. Early UK had label as shown here and stiff, glossy Shorewood cover.
