BING CROSBY/JEROME KERN SONGS DL 5001 (-49) US

Decca was one of the first competing record companies picking up Columbia's invention of the 33 rpm LP. This was their second issue on the new format, made early 1949. Most of those initial albums were transferences from 78 rpm:s, but I'm not sure about this. The cuts have different sources as you could expect with such a procedure, yet the 4x78 shellac album didn't predate but had contemporary release and the audio on this comes out wider with slightly better separation than anticipated if it'd been from much earlier recordings. Original or not - it still has that warm glow perfectly fitting Crosby's baryton and the pompous arrangements. All is good and I especially like the duets with his then wife Dixie Lee Crosby (1911-52). They do two classic love song together - "A Fine Romance" and "The Way You Look Tonight". The latter is a romantic favorite of mine and this version is one of the better. Also released on 4x78 shellac album same year (A-485), reissued as a 2xEP album 1954 (ED 594) and as 10 inch on Brunswick 1955 (LA 8505). First had label as shown here and thick glossy cover.
