ERIC CLAPTON 2383-021 (-70) UK
Recorded after the final tour with Blind Faith. Even if commonly presented as his first solo album it's more of a group effort, among others including Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett, Leon Russell, Stephen Stills and Bobby Keys. And that's what it sounds like - not Clapton with backing, but him being just another band member and almost too anonymous at parts. Good rock and enjoyable listening, yet in comparison to Cream's earlier pop/blues/psych marvels, the Blind Faith album or the breathtaking "Layla" he would do with Derek & The Dominos later same year it's almost a low point. Maybe if it'd been from lesser know artists I would have liked it more, but I just can't ignore the glorious context. Yet for a true Clapton fan it's indespensable and brings at least two gems - "Let It Rain", co-written with Bonnie Bramlett, and the by now classic "After Midnight" cover. IMO not his best but I couldn't be without it. Issued and re-issued all over the world on vinyl and CD, with or without bonus cuts. Early US on ATCO (SD 33-329), also as mono promo. First UK had label as shown here and fully laminated cover. (CÄRÄ*)
