PETER SARSTEDT SULP 1219 (-69) UK

British singer/songwriter of Indian heritage, born in Delhi 1941. Though with a regular production of more or less popular '45:s and LP:s from the late sixties through the years he's today mostly remembered for the world wide block buster "Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)" and considered a one hit wonder. This debute album had healthy sales due to the success of the single, but now almost forgotten. I still like it a lot. The songs are well written - melodic with concerned lyrics - and the vocals pleasant. Style is best described as orchestrated pop with psych interludes. Most cuts heavily arranged by Ian Green (who also handeled hits like "Something In The Air" and "Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes" ), including some adventurous turns and occational use of phasing. Produced by Ray Singer - before this member of (British) Nirvana and later involved in the carreers of Japan and David Sylvain. Three of the fourteen songs were previous '45 cuts - apart from WDYGTML also the 1968 medium hit "I'm A Cathedral" and a 1967 Island label b-side "Mary Jane". Audio is warm and embracing, providing good listening suitable for cozy moments. The mix is very collected and pushing the mono button hardly makes any difference, so I'm guessing the corresponding one-channel issue (ULP 1219) was a plain fold. First US on World Pacific (WPS-21895). Also as part of a 2-CD set (BGOCD 274) coupled with his second album and two '45 bonus tracks. Premiere UK had label as shown here, thick vinyl and laminated flip/back cover. (SYSÖ*)
