PAUL JONES/COME INTO MY MUSIC BOX SCX 6347 (-69) UK

If you follow the blog you know by now I'm a big fan of Paul Jones vocals as they were with Manfred Mann and lately also been trying to find a solo album that did him justice. To my taste the debute "My Way" didn't work 100% due to song choice and too grand arrangements and the "Privilege" soundtrack, though having a couple of good songs, not showing enough of the guy. This comes out a lot more pleasing to my ears. Three of the songs self-penned, but to the larger part a cover album, treating sixties hits originally performed by artists as Bob Dylan, Donovan, Marvin Gaye, The Band, Foundations and Procol Harum. Production and arrangements shared in and between the tracks by then music notabilities as Tony Visconti, Peter Asher (Peter & Gordon) and Mike Vickers (former Manfred Mann) among others...for more details check track list below. The total outcome has a bit of Swinging London, incorporating baroque, psych and orchestrated pop. Though most of it very well sung I could do without one or two of the more regular pop tunes, but there's also enough stuff to make it special. Title track and the self-penned "I'm Here To Nudge Your Mind" both melodic in a psych atmosphere. Another of his own compositions - "The Committee" - very good baroque pop and even if this version of "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" isn't as emotional as the Marvin Gaye original it's still very good sung. Don't know if any other Procul Harum fan would agree to a "Homburg" carried by severly warped vocals to a sparsely orchetsrated background, but it works fine with me. As a whole a good period album well worth close attention. Also released on vinyl Downunder, but to my knowledge never in US. UK mono SX 6347. UK 1998 CD on RPM Records (RPM 183) as "The Paul Jones Collection - Vol. 3 - Come Into My Music Box" came with twelve bonus tracks. Premiere UK had label as shown here with "Sold in UK..." and laminated flip/back cover. (MÄNÄ*)
