BAD COMPANY ILPS 9279 (-74) UK

A supergroup of the seventies. All members came from known bands - Paul Rogers and Simon Kirke remained from the "Free" setting, Mick Ralphs came from Mott The Hoople and Boz Burell from King Crimson. Peter Grant managed, parallel to his Led Zeppelin obligations. And it was a success - the LP topped Billboard and they became frequent guests at top 20, earning gold and platinum awards. The debute is filled with radio-friendly rock, not very dynamic but more "evenly" produced. It sounds a lot like The Free, but more elaborated. I hear nice songs, well performed, but never provocative or emotional. The guitars are great and all backing fits. It's good back-ground music for chores or car cruising, but not something I sit down and listen closely to. What makes it worth having is Paul Rogers vocals. His very special voice could by small means make any song sound important. To me that voice was behind The Free success and also made Jimmy Pages "Firm" project fly. US issue on Swan Song (SS 8501) with different image inside foldout. First UK with label as shown here, thick vinyl and thick Robor f/o cover. (FDÄ*)
