THE BEACH BOYS/SURF'S UP SSL 10313 (-71) UK
In an earlier post I hailed the Sunflower album and called it one of the best they made. I just listened to this and have to say it's up there and then some. A bountiful mix of introvert and commercial, drug inspired and down to earth at the same time. The title track and a few more were remains from the Smile project given a new shape, "Student Demonstration Time" a re-work of Lieber/Stoller's "Riot In Cell Block #9", the rest made directly for the album by the gang, Van Dyke Parks and manager Jack Rieley. Not many groups can keep up a good work even through five albums, renewing their art and remaining fresh, but this was Beach Boys seventeenth and still going strong. To my ears there's nothing bad on here and no fillers, every single track has an identity of it's own and all is rigorously produced and mixed with top audio. If I have to pick a favorite it's "Disney Girls" - a perfect song that goes directly to my heart every time I hear it...very emotional. Premiere US release on Brother/Reprise (RS 6453). Early UK with label as shown here, thin structured cover and lyric/picture sheet. First few hundred also had large promo poster with same pic as front cover. (BÅB*)
