MOUNTAIN/FLOWERS OF EVIL ILPS 9179 (-71) UK

A follow-up to "Nantucket Sleighride", issued same year and also very good. At this time the group was on the edge of break-up, due to drug problems and Pappalardis increasing hearing disorder. They disbanded within a year and this became the last studio effort from the original combo. Side two of the album are from a live concert at Fillmore East. It's well recoded and cearly shows the members individual skills and the incredibly loud and raw atmosphere of their appearence. It's hard to imagine a harsher one than this version of "Mississippi Queen". The studio side has four top numbers and a short instrumental piece. The songs are as good as anything on Nantucket Sleighride, with the same mix of rude and gentle. My two favs are title track and "Crossroader" - a classic rocker carried by a simple and very efficient riff, impossible to forget. This was a too short carreer for a great grup. Pappalardi continued as producer, West and Laing went on to form a new band and Steve Knight returned to traditional jazz. There was a short-lived reunion few years later wich resulted in another good studio album - "Avalanche" - but later settings of the group never reached these hights again. First US release on Windfall (5501). 1:st UK with label as shown here, stiff matt cover with "pinched" spine and Island custom inner. (LYBÖ*) (MÖU*)
