MARVIN, WELSH & FARRAR SRZA 8502 (-71) UK

For more background on this shortlived constellation (1970-73) check post on their second album "Second Opinion" http://monolover.blogspot.se/search?q=marvin,+welch . Listening to this it's hard to believe two of the guys came from The Shadows and later would be part in a reformation of the old group. The music here is more like anti-Shadows. Far from perky instrumentals and simple pop hits. Main impression is perfectly produced soft rock and ballads with angelic vocals and lots of good guitars. Reminding of Hollies or Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, but not standing back to any of those. All songs self-penned, two of them - "Throw Down A Line" and "Silvery Rain" - remakes of UK hits Marvin earlier had written for Cliff Richard. It has all the attributes of a classic, from songwriting to performance and studio work, but didn't sell at all. US had their own successful vocal rock bands and in UK the public wanted The Shadows as they were. This transformation was too much too sudden for them to take. Luckily it has been rediscovered by music lovers last decades and is now getting some of the recognition it deserves. US first on Capitol (ST-760), French on Stateside (2 C064-04715), Australian on Columbia (SCXO-7989) . 1991 See For Miles CD had "Strike A Light" - B-side of their 1972 "Marmaduke" single - as bonus (SEE CD 324). First UK had label as shown here and structured fold/out cover. (RÄZ*)(CXÄ*)
