JAMES BROWN & THE FAMOUS FLAMES/LIVE AT THE GARDEN KING 1018 (-67) US MONO

For more background check post on the 1966 UK "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" album. Even if his studio albums sold pretty well all over the world, it was the live performances that made him special on the then soul scene and still today hold a big part of his legacy. The unbridled yet on-the-spot vocals, the tight backing, the limber body work, the cape, the ostentatious exhaustion and faked fainting - singing, dancing and acting together almost making him a one man musical. This was his first live show recorded in a finer milieu - the legendary Latin Casino in Philadelphia. But there's certainly nothing posh going on here. The band is super tight, his vocals outbursting and the energy undeniable like a serie of small bombs bursting on stage. The dancing and acting well hidden from the vinyl though very easy to imagine from the listening chair with closed eyes. As I understand additional public noise was overdubbed for the recording, but in that case very well done and not at all disturbing. Audio on this US mono not super clear yet giving a close impression making it easy to be there. This is good live - a funky greeting from over fifty years ago showing it almost as it was. Also originally issued in Canada (King KS/1018), Italy (Durium 1018), UK (Pye International NPL 28104) and South Africa (King KGG 7513). US 2009 2XCD (Hip-O Select B0012928-02) as an extended 34-track. Premiere US mono had label as shown here, thick vinyl and glossy cover. (LYBÖ*)
