FLÄSKET BRINNER SRS 4601 (-71) SWEDEN

Instrumental prog band from Stockholm, existing 1970-81. Some of the members started in the mid-sixties pop band "The Quints", who's only surviving recording can be found on the compilation "Zingotoppen" (see earlier post). After some member changes (among others recruiting Björn J:son Lindh) they transformed into "Atlantic Ocean" and under that name recorded one album for the Love Records label - "Tranquility Bay" (LRLP 18). After further member changes (including Bo Hansson, who came in during these sessions) they emerged as Fläsket Brinner (eng. The Flesh Is Burning) and recorded this album for the independent Silence label 1970-71.  Consisting of takes from two live events - at Liljevalchs Art Gallery and Stockholm Concert Hall (when they were opening act to Frank Zappa), plus sessions at Decibel studios. It's a mix of folk, jazz and psych of a kind you could call improv prog. Impossible to describe all songs... but to take two - "Gånglåten" (eng. walking tune) is folk rock ending with with a jazzy twist and "Tysta Finskan" (Silent Finnish Girl) starts beat steady with a flute but slides into a more free form jam. Even if partly prepared it sounds very adventurous all through with lots of jamming, sweet organ and tons of good guitars. The audio on this press is superb, like they didn't meddle with the recordings at all just cut them right in. So if you're into hearing well played instrumental jams with lots of presence it could be worth a spin or two. Only issued on vinyl in Sweden, repress came with same sleeve and number on a darker yellow label. Unofficial CD issues in Germany, Russia and Sweden on Flawed Gems (GEM 32). First press had bright yellow label as shown here on very heavy unflexible vinyl in a fully laminated cover, some with info sheet about Silence label. (CCÖ*) (SCÄ*) (NÅY*)
