STEPPENWOLF/MONSTER SSL 5021 (-69) UK

The band's fourth album and their heaviest and most political so far. Not critically acclaimed at the time and didn't sell as much as its predecessors. It seems reveiwers had a hard time digesting the clash between hard rock and left-wing lyrics adressing contemporary problems in the American society as the Vietnam war. It was also criticized for being untidy. That may have been a problem in US back then, but certainly not in Sweden early seventies. At this time the local music scene was flooded with more or less amateuristic garage bands, most of them having a hard core communist agenda. From that perspective the music on this LP sounded almost proper and the lyrics barely liberal. So here it was more middle-of-the-road and attractive to a broader public. Listening today it certainly defends its place in music history - as a good exemple of early hard rock and the political awareness giving a snap-shot of subjects important fortyfive years ago. Favorite tracks - "Monster" and "Draft Resister". Premiere US on Dunhill (DS-50066). Japan 2013 CD reissue on Geffen (UICY-75558) came with mono single versions of "Move Over", "Power Play" and "Monster" as bonus. Very first UK had black/white/red label with "SOLD IN UK..." text, as shown here, and laminated fold/out cover.
