THIS IS THE MOODY BLUES MB 1/2 (-74) UK

(Following is only about the first UK release. Although the tracking coincide on other domestic issues, the choice of edits or versions of the songs may differ.) Even if I got all their albums from the period 1967-72 and only one track on this was previously non-LP, it's still a lot of fun. I've heard the compiling was a collaboration between some of the members and producer Tony Clarke, but need to confirm that. Anyway it's an odyssey through the groups most creative period with some of their best songs. One can always argue the choice of tracks, but they did so much good it would have been impossible to get it all into a 2-LP set. There's a lot here you don't get on the original albums. "Question" is the initial '45 version, very different from all later edits. It's simpler and all over more acoustic with longer guitar intro. It seems the group liked the album edit better, but this is the one for me. "Ride My See Saw" is the shorter single edit and a lot clearer and bouncier here. "I'm Just A Singer In A Rock'n'Roll Band" also seems to be the '45 cut with drum intro loud and clear from the start, while the album version is tuned up. The original album edit of "Tuesday Afternoon" was over eight minutes and the singel six minutes shorter. This version is 4:08 and a sort of golden mean. "Nights In White Satin" had two different single edits - on here is the second made. This also has "A Simple Game", originally B-side of "Nights In White Satin", on LP for the first time. Some of the other songs seems to have slightly different mixes and/or edits. It sold very well on arrival, reaching #11 in US and #14 in UK. First US on Threshold (2THS 12). Early UK with label as shown here and matt f/o cover. (PÖP*)(MBÅL*)
