JOHN LENNON/PLASTIC ONO BAND PCS 7124 (-70) UK

For me this is the best he made. Peeled off, right on with an impression of 100% honesty. It has been said the album mainly was a result of John and Yoko's previous participation in Arthur Janov's primal theraphy group. Maybe that had something to do with it, but then only as a trigger. It was his first real solo album after Beatles, not counting the three experimental ones or the Toronto live. Composing is in the same vein as some of his last efforts with the group - "Ballad Of John And Yoko", "Come Together", "I Want You" - all simple traditional rock tunes with introvert lyrics, but on here he takes it much further. The production couldn't be simpler. With exception of Phil Spector and and Billy Preston playing piano on one track each, Lennon, Ringo and Klaus Voorman does it all. Spector was supposed to produce, but hardly ever attended, so Lennon handeled it himself. Some of the songs sounds like first takes or rehersals wich gives it a natural strength. With an experienced producer in the booth there'd probably been more overdubs and different edits, resulting in smoother sound and bigger sales, but not making it outstanding. This is garage and early punk rock with beautiful melodies and sincere lyrics, sung by one of the best rock voices. The audio is perfect and natural, bringing you close. I couldn't ask for more. In Japan the album was named "John's Soul" (John no Tamashii). First US on Apple (SW 3372) with lyric inner. Earliest UK on thick vinyl, white label, fully laminated cover and lyric inner.
