JOHN CALE/VINTAGE VIOLENCE S 64256 (-71) UK
The first of over thirty solo albums he's done so far after leaving Velvet Underground 1968. Favored by most critics at release it sold OK in US, but didn't show on the UK list. Recorded 1969 with a shortlived setting including Harvey Brooks and Harland Jeffreys among others. Cale himself has said he wasn't pleased with the outcome, thought it was too simple and anoymous. I don't agree. Maybe he's refering to the arrangements and overall style, reminding of The Band or a number of other contemporary US rock efforts, but IMO most of the songwriting is great and not standing back to what he did later on. I do like it and still spin it after all those years - especially "Gideons Bible" and "Ghost Story". Premiere US 1970 on Columbia "360" label (CS 1037). First UK had label as shown here and glossy Shorepak cover. (CÄLX*)
