DAVY JONES NPL 18178 (-67) UK MONO

British born David Jones (1945-2012) started his carreer as child actor in UK TV-series. He made success in big production musical "Oliver" both in London and on Broadway and recieved a Tony nomination. During a promo appearance for the musical with Ed Sullivan 1964, at the same show Beatles made their US TV debute, he was amazed by the reception they got - "I watched The Beatles from the side of the stage, I saw the girls going crazy, and said to myself, this is it, I want a piece of that". And he got it two years later as a member of The Monkees becoming a teen idol with huge success around the globe. However after that 1964 show he signed a contract with US Columbia, participated in a few TV-series and recorded this album for Columbias sub-label Colpix 1965 (CP/SCP 493). It didn't sell a lot - #185 on Billboard - and neither did the singles from it, with "What Are We Going To Do" halting at #93 and the rest not charting at all. This UK first didn't show up until 1967, obviously as an attempt to cash in on The Monkees fame, but it didn't do very well either. Listening to it today I think it's good but far from great. Although recorded in US the production and arrangements are typical orchestrated britpop. There's a nice choice of covers, melodic with a kind atmosphere, much reminding of contemporary Hermans Hermits. Iv'e never been a fan of his vocals, find them too cute and childish, but apart from that it's an OK LP. UK issue in mono only had label as shown here, thick unflexible vinyl and laminated flip/back cover. (MÖRS*) (PÖY*)
