STATUS QUO/QUO 9102 001 (-74) UK

Already posted their two premiere Pye LP:s and two first for Vertigo - "Piledriver" and "Hello!". Here's the third for Vertigo and final step before the main breakthrough with "On The Level". You might think that after getting positive response from both public and media for "Piledriver" they stopped developing and just kept on the same thing, but that's not the whole truth. If was first with OTL they seem to have found the signature sound that would stay about the same up to today. To my ears the previous three all differ one way or another. And as all were self-produced I guess the quartet more or less consciously tested their way up to what vinyl outcome they felt most comfortable with. This for exemple is by far the most raging - darker, dirtier and more violent than the others. E.g. "Drifting Away" has every sign of British punk rock about two years ahead and could have been at least some inspration to Sex Pistols and others in that genre. "Backwater" very hard rock with distinct rhythm and noisy guitars. Album ending with the almost eight minute long "Slow Train", changing between different rock themes with one more violent than the other. If issued today it would probably be hailed by most true rock'n'rollers, but never a big seller. However back then the LP did good with #2 in UK and top ten in many other countries, while the the spawned 45 "Break The Rules" managed UK #8. Issued and reissued all over the world through the years. First US on A&M (SP-3649). Most CD:s came with the non-LP flip to "Break The Rules" - "Lonely Night" - as bonus track. Premiere UK had label as shown here and thin glossy cover with picture/lyric insert. This has a lyric inner instead so I guess it's somewhat later. (WLÖ*) (STÄQ*)
