KATE & ANNA McGARRIGLE/LOVE OVER AND OVER 2480 665 (-82) SWEDEN

Picked this from a bin a while ago and after spinning it a lot I'm amazed. Had another copy a couple of decades ago and though I remember liking it I don't recall it was this good. Follow up to "French Record" (see earlier post), which in its own way was very charming and included the 1976 huge hit "Complainte Pour Ste. Catherine", but as a whole maybe a little too regional to fit a world wide audience. This on the other hand has everything going for it. Songs are catchy with meaningful lyrics and they sing like angels to a very skilled backing, all conveyed by cunning arrangements and very good audio. Still kind of folky though more towards pop and a least giving me more than one goose-bumping moment. "Move Over Moon" starting almost psychedelic with warped vocals and then moving over to a very catchy up-tempo song in a borderline twenties atmosphere. "Love Over And Over" so intense and inviting you just wanna be there showing sweet love. "Sun, Son (Shining On the Water)", a new more sentimental version of their French song "Avant La Guerre", works very well here too...very touching. "Midnight Flight" is almost overwhelming with its odd yet beautiful quire structures to a steady backbeat...I'm sucked in and just sitting there with a big smile and bumped skin all trough. Still quite common but as no one seems to talk about it today I guess you could call it a lost gem. But if you're like me and appreciate well written and arranged catchy songs dressed in beautiful femals vocals, I guarantee a good trip. Premiere Canadian on Polydor (2424 240). Also released on vinyl in US, Downunder and a couple of European countries. US 1997 CD on Hannibal (HNCD 1405) came with two bonus tracks. First Scandinavian had label as shown here and thin glossy cover with lyric/credit inner. (FÄV*)
