TAJ MAHAL (S) 8-63279 (-68) UK STEREO VS. MONO

Though US Columbia still made separate mono mixes in late -67/early -68 they for some reason didn't always send those mono tapes to Britain, so from about that time most US Columbia recordings issued as mono in UK were folds. Reason was probably that many of the original mono mixes didn't differ a lot from what you got when connecting the channels, so regular listeners wouldn't be able to tell them apart anyway. As I understand the US version of this came as true mono. Had this UK mono for a long time and always liked it for its warmth and clarity. Also very curious if it was true or a fold. Now after finding a 1st press UK stereo I decided to check it out and after comparing I believe it's true. Connecting the channels on the stereo gives a similar result, yet there are differences in balance, not much but it's there. That together with at least two of the fade-outs - "E.Z. Rider" and "Checkin Up On My Baby" - varies a couple of seconds between the formats, at least convinces me as there would be no alternate song endings from a straight fold. For more on this great blues album also check my earlier post on the UK mono https://monolover.blogspot.se/2016/04/taj-mahal-8-63279-68-uk-mono.html . Premiere US on Columbia (CL 2779/CS 9579). Mono version reissued by Sundazed 2005 (LP 5196). First UK had labels as shown here and laminated covers. (MÅW*) (CPYC*) (DÄJ*)
