THE SAVAGE ROSE/IN THE PLAIN SLPHM 46292 (-68) GERMANY
For background and more about the group check my post on their debute. This was recorded shortly after the first album. The garage feeling remains, yet even more psychedelic with a kind of dreamy acid feel to it. Still very influenced by contemporary US psych, especially Jefferson Airplane, but also the UK scene - e.g. the intro to "Before I Was Born" is like a powerful remake of Rolling Stones "Flight 505". All bands have influences, but few can mix and mould it into something personal and unique. Savage Rose sure could. Odd chord changes and rythms, almost mystic background quires and howling guitars together with Anisettes girlish chants makes it so good. To my ears as fresh and intriguing today as 1968. Audio is tops and I especially like the mix with the drums loud and clear providing a balance to the softer melodic layers. Released in the sixties and early seventies in US, UK and a number of other countries. I'm not 100% on all those, but to my knowledge the only genuine 1968 issue was a German press for Scandinavia with the "SLPHM" prefix as shown here. All others, domestic or foreign, having differing record numbers, came 1969 or later. First US on Polydor (24-6001) had alternate cover design, most other early issues came in the same glossy "gold" cover as this. (SCÄ*)(FÄV*) (GÖXÄ*) (SÄWÖ*)
