CLARK HUTCHINSON/A=MH2 DN.R. 2 (-69) UK MONO

Both Andy Clark and Mick Hutchinson came out of UK underground band Sam Gopal Dream (wich in other settings also included Mickey Finn and Lemmy Kilmister). On events like "The 14 Hour Technicolor Dream" and "Christmas On Earth Show" they performed with the cream of UK psych bands, but never got a breakthrough of their own. Sam Gopal was a northern Indian tabla player and had a lead impact on the groups sound. After leaving SGD the two-piece recorded one album for Decca that was withdrawn, no cover was made and only a few copys are known to exist - officially released 1994 by Little Wing as "Blues" (LW 2042). Although this second attempt was recorded almost two years after they left Sam Gopal, the music is still very inspired by Indian motives. Three of the cuts are ragas, with electric guitar doing the sitar parts, and the two remaining - a solo guitar piece and one electric psych with an almost operatic feel - having the same atmosphere. Today it may be labeled as progressive psych, but it'll probably need a genre of its own. The band would grow into a quartet for their next album "Retribution" and record the ultimate drug epic "Free To Be Stoned", but this is something completely different - introvert and withdrawn. Mick Hutchinson was, and is a very fine guitarist, but never made any commercial choices for his early music. Got no stereo to compare with, but I doubt Decca would do a separate mono mix this late so it's probably from a very good compatible, coming through big and strong with perfect separation. Early US on Sire/London (SES 97021), German on Decca (6.22426). Also re-issued on CD and vinyl a number of times, some with bonus tracks. First UK press with label as shown here and laminated cover.
