GORDON MILLS/DO IT YOURSELF ACL 1191 (-65) UK MONO (unissued)

Unreleased album, this copy originally from an employee of a record company. Back cover notes below have information about his early carreer. Today Gordon Mills (1935-86) must be seen as one of the main figures behind the UK pop wonder - he created stars like Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdinck and Gilbert O'Sullivan and also wrote songs for Cliff Richard, Paul Jones, Searchers and Peter & Gordon among others. But before most of that happened he recorded this album - late 1964-65. It was recorded, pressed and supplied with a ready made cover, but never issued. I have a hard time understanding why. As you can guess all songs are self penned and of very good quality, many of them later covered by other artists. It's all contemporary UK pop and r&b, a few uptempo and others medium or slow ballads. Most songs have (uncredited) female background vocals, some are orchestrated and some have rock setting. There's also good guitars - the long solo on the instrumental "David's Theme" reminds of Hank Marvin or Jorgen Ingmann. Tom Jones makes a guest appearance on one track - "The Rose" - wich seems to be another version here than the one on his "Along Came Jones" album. Produced by Mills himself and arranged by Les Reed. It's not Rolling Stones, more like Gerry and The Pacemakers, Freddie and The Dreamers, Hermans Hermits and the Tom Jones debute. His vocals doesn't have a crooning or stud quality, but secure and far from unpleasant. As good or better than many other contemporary issues. If anyone reading this have any idea why it wasn't released, or other information - please share. (YMÖ*)(MÖRS*)(SYSÖ*)(TÖJX*)
