JEFF BECK/TRUTH SX 6293 (-68) UK MONO
In retrospective the constellation on this album could be seen as some kind of supergroup. Guitarist Jeff Beck just out of Yardbirds, Ron Wood of later Rolling Sones fame handeling base, Mick Waller playing drums and Rod Stewart on lead vocals. One of those albums where you can hear white blues getting so heavy it's borderline hard rock. IMO one of the first in that genre. There had been earlier attempts from groups like Kinks and Yardbirds and US bands Iron Butterfly and Blue Cheer, but maybe with exception of the latter nothing as elaborately rough. As Jimmy Page later admitted a big inspiration to early Led Zeppelin and predating both "Deep Purple In Rock" and the Black Sabbath debute with over a year. This mono is a big strong mix, clear and dynamic, and at least to my taste way better than the stereo. There are lots of differences between the formats - will sort that out later - but the biggest is the "Becks Bolero" mono having about 20 seconds of guitar howl at the end, not appearing on the stereo. Early US on Epic (BN 26413). First UK with label as shown here, laminated flip/back cover and EMI ad inner. (JÄBÄ*)(YMÖ*)
