MOUNTAIN/CLIMBING 4501 (-70) US

Not counting the Leslie West solo album "Mountain" which included Felix Pappalardi (1939-83), N.D. Smart and Norman Landsberg, this was the group's actual debute with a setting that would remain for two years - West, Pappalardi, Steve Knight (1935-2013) and Corky Laing. And what a debute it was. With exception of "Theme From An Imaginary Western" - a Jack Bruce song from his first solo album, there produced by Pappalardi - all numbers were self penned, most with Pappalardi's wife Collins as co-writer. A perfect blend of well written melodic songs and crude performance, framed by a multitude of great guitars. It's more rough rock'n'roll than hard rock, yet rawer and harder than most contemporary hard rock band's. The impact was fairly uniqe at the time and still is - I guess not many had the skill or energy to keep up. I notice today they're not considered very collectible and the prices for original's don't even remotely reflect rarity or musical quality. It's a pity, but I'm certain future vinylists will find out what a great group it was. Early UK issue on Bell (SBLL 133). Since I don't know much about US pressings I'm not sure what this is, but guess it's early. Glossy ridged label with large fonts and no "Windfall" before the record number. The vinyl is thick with different settings of etched matrix no.s and signs plus stamped "sterling" on both sides. Cover is a glossy fold/out with opening for record inside.(ÄHÅR*) (YZÄ*) (MÖU*)
