ROD STEWART - FACES LIVE/COAST TO COAST, OVERTURE AND BEGINNERS SRM-1-697 (-73) US
The band's last original release, before Rod Stewart went all solo and other members spread to different famed outfits - Ron Wood joining Rolling Stones, Kenney Jones became a Who member and Ian McLagan continued as backing for artists like Joe Cocker, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. At this time Ronnie Lane had already left due to frustration over Rod Stewart taking too much place and went on to form his own band "Slim Chance, here replaced by session musician Tetsu Yamauchi. The LP counts outtakes from two US concerts - in Anaheim and Hollywood - performed October 1973. You get a mix of numbers earlier either by Faces or Stewart solo coupled with two covers new for this - Temptation's "I Wish It Would Rain" and John Lennon's "Jealous Guy". The issue was obviously a contract filler and have recieved mainly low rates through the years from both fans and critics. Faces was a very popular live band at the time and it has been said this was way below their usual standard. But for me who's always liked their studio stuff and never saw them live back then it's totally OK. Let be a little sloppy at times, but they were never like clockwork and for me the imprecision as compensated by true feeling is part of their charm. So maybe not the tightest live performance from the period, but still good rock'n'roll in a friendly atmosphere possible to enjoy from a comfy listening chair. Favorite tracks - "Stay With Me" and "Jealous Guy". Originally also released in Europe, Canada, Japan and downunder, also on cassette and 8-track, then reissued all over the world on vinyl and CD. Premiere UK on Mercury (9100 001). Early US had label as shown here and thick glossy fold/out cover with picture credit inner. (YZÄ*) (LYBÖ*) (SXÅH*)
