THE NEW VAUDEVILLE BAND/ WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL STL 5386 (-66) UK
A band initially consisting of session musicians gathered by songwriter Geoff Stephens to record his "Winchester Cathedral" composition. After that, to the surprise of many, became a world wide hit Stephens was asked by the label to form a new group fitting for touring and record an LP. He then approched Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band for support, but only succeded to win over brass musician Bob Kerr, while the others weren't interested at all. Anyway a new outfit was established to record the rest of the album, among others also including soundtrack and stage-show writer Alan Klein on vocals. They managed a couple of more high charters on various lists, among them a version of "There's A Kind Of Hush" - which became a hit in South Africa and Downunder prior to the one recorded by Herman's Hermits - before breaking up 1968. This debute album is filled with vaudeville retro in a twenties style with time characteristic instrumentation and languishing singing. Much reminding of early Bonzo Dog, though a little less playful. To me title track is by far the most enjoyable with its catchy melody sung through a megaphone and embellished by a sweet guitar, but the rest so well done it's good listening thoughout. The stereo mixes are tops for their time and the audio superb. It wont rock your world, but maybe make it a little bit cozier. Issued and reissued all over the world on vinyl and CD through the years, also on reel and cassette. First US with different sleeve design on Fontana (SRF 67569) came as an 11-track, omitting "O Donna Clara". UK 1997 16-track CD on Hallmark (308192) had the same title, but though with cuts in common more like a greatest hits collection. First UK (also as mono TL 5386) had structured label as shown here and laminated flip/back cover.
