THE KINKS/MUSWELL HILLBILLIES SF8243 (-71) UK

This was their first album after changing from Pye to RCA and it truly has an unusual agenda. The subjects are alcoholism, obesity, bureaucracy, mental disease, prisons and isolation...and still it's a feel-good album! I can't think of any other group that would have managed a project like that, but Ray Davies' lyrics, filled with insight and humour makes it fit perfectly. Musically it's a mix of rock, country, music-hall, ballads and salvation army. What makes the lyrics so great is Ray's not pointing fingers, making statements or looking down at the mess - he's in there himself. The production is lovely with an overall un-modern style - among other things they used 10 year old microphones to get the right antique feel. I love listening to this when I'm low, it always comforts me and makes me feel a little better. The album did not sell well on release - reached #48 in US and didn't chart at all in England. US issue on RCA with same tracking (LSP 4644). Also re-issued in US on CD and vinyl (Rhino R2 70934) 1990. (KYX*)
