THE KINKS/THE KINK KONTROVERSY NPL18131 (-65) UK MONO

I've been a Kinks fan since my first copy of "Kinda Kinks" in the mid-sixties. Not only because of the great melodies or Rays often insightful lyrics, but also the directness and sincerity. I get the impression it's all true, without cover-ups or adaptions. ( Also their early recordings and issues always feels fresh compared to the audiophile crap we get in todays brave new digitalized world.) This album reflects a segue for them, with both riff rockers of earlier type and the pop style comments on personal and social life that would be a big part of the groups image for the coming years. Shel Talmys production is clear and edgy and makes it all come through brilliantly. It's all so good it's hard to pick a favorite from the album, but if I have to - "I'm On An Island". Recorded and mixed in mono only, but a fake stereo was made for export to other European countries. US issue came in both mono and re-channeled stereo (Reprise R/RS 6197), with same tracking, but different cover. Also re-issued many times on vinly and CD, some with bonus tracks. Early UK had label as shown here with "Recording first...". It came in a laminated flip/back cover. (KYX*) (PÖY*)
