THE RENEGADES/CADILLAC SLP 600 (-64) MONO FINLAND
Garage band formed 1960 in Birmingham, UK. They never managed to get a recording contract or breakthrough in England, but gathered some following in a couple of other European countries like Finland, Italy and Germany, mostly because of a wild stage show. Their biggest success was in Finland with a number of hits and sold out concerts 1964-66. They recorded four albums there in Scandia Studio, Helsinki, where of this was the first. While the eponymous second mostly consisted of for the circumstances rather soft garage pop (see earlier post - https://monolover.blogspot.com/search?q=renegades ) this debute is at least partly more rocking. Six of the cuts self-penned and six covers. "Cadillac" actually a re-make of the Vince Taylor song "Brand New Cadillac" and as such used by Benny Andersson's band Hep Stars 1965 for their big domestic "Cadillac" hit, there credited to The Renegades. You also get versions of Little Richard's "Lucille", Ray Charles "What'd I Say" and Buddy Holly's "Look At Me". The self-made songs make me think of the softer side of early Kinks. They're not copying, but the intrumentation and vocal style have similarities. Of those I like "Hold Me Close" and "Bad Bad Baby" best. As a garage album this ticks all my boxes, showing a couple of eager young guys live in a studio, doing the best they can with what they got, seemingly without production or any kind of embellishing measures. The audio is direct and 100% natural giving me that being-there feeling I love so much. Originals can be tricky to find in playable nick, but if you're true garage lover it could be worth the search. 1965 vinyl issues in Germany (Hansa 73 168IT) and Holland (Artone PSM 041). 2001 Finnish CD on Warner (8573-87860-2). Premiere Finnish had label as shown here on very heavy unflexible vinyl in a thin glossy cover. (ÖGÄ*) (CCÖ*) (BRBÄ*)
