THE CANDYMEN ABCS 616 (-67) US

American five-piece band founded 1965. They issued two albums and seven singles before dissolving early seventies, after which three of the members - Rodney Justo, Dean Daughtry and Robert Nix - continued in the today more famed Atlanta Rhythm Section. I'll get back to them later. This Candymen debute is still early days. On the surface a for its time rather typical US pop album sounding like a blend of perky British and relaxed American sunshine. Going into details I'm hearing a wild blend of genres - blues and soul together with psych, garage, baroque pop and bubblegum jauntily mixed together seemingly without any common direction. Listening through can be a bumpy road, but a couple of the tracks stand out. The "Stormy Monday Blues" cover cool with an embracing organ and very good guitars, "Stone Blues Man" screamy garage rock and "Hope" melodic positive pop. Stereo mix and audio just fine. As a whole indeed uneven, yet with enough goodies to make it worthwhile. First mono/stereo vinyl issues in US and Canada (ABC/S 616). Italian mono on Stateside (QSL 113). US 2010 CD on Darby Pop (705105293530). Premiere US had label as shown here in a glossy cover with ABC ad inner. (YZÄ*)
