THE PEDDLERS/THREE IN A CELL 63411 (-68) UK MONO

Today almost forgotten British trio. The original setting lasted 1964-72 and they disbanded 1976. This was their forth LP and the second of three for CBS. The members background - Trevor Morais came from Rory Storm and the Hurricanes and Roy Philips and Tab Martin from The Tornados - makes you expect garage or happy uptempo britpop, but this is something completely different. Supercool with lots of warm flowing organ and crooner-like baryton vocals it's more for a dance at the Ritz than a teen discoteque. Reminds of contemporary jazzy work from Georgie Fame and Alan Price, but more composed. Four of the tracks written by Philips, the rest covers of popular songs, but they're all treated the same way making it an evenly pleasant experience. Produced by Mervyn Conn (british promoter and arranger who among others worked with Beatles, Marlene Dietrich, Chubby Checker and Peggy Lee) and Cyril Smith (who as far as I know only worked with this group). The mono sounds like a separate mix, big and warm with prominent organ. US stereo issue on Epic (BN 26458). The 2002 2-CD anthology "How Cool Is Cool...the complete CBS Recordings" (Columbia 5097 40 2) is exactly that - three albums plus some A:s and B:s. First UK with structured label as shown here and laminated cover. (YMÖ*)
