MARY HOPKIN/EARTH SONG OCEAN SONG SAPCOR 21 (-71) UK
Her second and last original UK album up to the 1989 "Spirit". Issued two years after the debute "Postcard", a lot had been going on in her life and that clearly shows here. With the first album you can hear a very talented girl, led by the hand of the great Paul McCartney - producing and telling her what to do. To my taste that is a very good album and so is this, but with a different expression. During the recordings she was dating producer Tony Visconti and they married a month after relesase. It's hard to know exactly how much the love affair meant for the sessions, but she sounds more grown-up and secure here than on the debute. Same warmth and emotion, yet a little more restrained and content. Visconti's production and string arrangements are perfect. He was one of the best UK studio guys already and it's safe to assume he put some extra effort into this. Among the musicians were Dave Cousins (Strawbs), Ralf McTell (composer of "Streets Of London" on the album), Kevin Peek and legend Danny Thompson on double bass (Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, Pentangle). Bill Price was studio engineer and Ken Scott handeled the mixing. For some reason the LP wasn't a big seller on release, the '45 "Water, Paper & Clay" didn't chart in UK and only reached #113 on Billboard. That's hard to imagine when you listen today. The album hasn't aged a bit and sounds as fresh and important as it did fortytwo years ago. First US on Apple (SMAS-3381), as US CD 1992 Capitol (CDP7 98695 2). Premiere UK had dark label as shown here, matt f/o cover and custom Apple "Important Notice..." inner. (BÄ*) (FÄV*) (ÄPLÄ*) (GJÅ)
