SAM & DAVE, BOOKER T & THE MG:S, CARLA THOMAS/THE STAX-VOLT TOUR IN LONDON VOL.1 589010 (-67) UK

A recording from the hugely successful tour artists belonging to the Detroit based label made in Europe 1966-67. Not only did the gigs draw big crowds, the high quality performances also opened many European ears to black American music and led to increased popularity for the whole soul genre on the continent. The London Astoria concerts were issued on two albums - volume 2 had Mar-Keys, Otis Redding and Eddie Floyd. Listening to this record I can only wish that I'd been there. The artists give all they got and the audience is mesmerized - supporting the tunes with handclaps, shouting and applauding. It must have been magic. Audio is very good for its time. The stereo doesn't seem to be after-mixed at all, just giving a wide expression of what happened on stage. I've never seen a mono issue, but the stereo is an OK compatible so maybe that was it. US issue "The Stax/Volt Revue, Volume One, Live In London" ( Atlantic/Stax S 721) was a merging of the two UK volumes, omitting two tracks from "Booker T" and one from "Sam & Dave" appearing on this. First UK with label as shown here, thick vinyl and fully laminated cover. (SÄM*)(FÄV*)(LYBÖ*)(TÄX*)
