PUHDYS 855 404 (-75) EAST GERMANY

When culture in former East Germany is discussed today it's always about supression and censorship. Domestic issues are popular among collectors, but then mostly ones with the biggest British or American stars. However there was a blooming musical scene inside the country, some of it underground and some public. For the public acts the lyrics and the artists official standpoints could be subjects for censorship, but the musical expression was free. From 1974 up to the German intergration Puhdys released sixteen albums - studio, live and compilations - in various genres. I'm only doing this LP here, but the group has an interesting history and if you want to know more check this link - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puhdys . This was their second album. I don't understand German, but the music gets through loud and clear and it does me good. A few of the tracks are melodic orchestrated ballads, but most is hard rock with a progressive ingredient. There's inspiration from contemporary acts like Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper, still with a very individual expression. The recording is rather basic compared to things made in UK or US studios at the time with fewer overdubs, but the audio is just fine. The guitars are great all through with many attractive riffs - I especially like the haunting one in "Langstreckenlauf" and the complicated chord figures in "Die Sonne Kennt Ihren Weg". Favorite track - "Jodelkuh-Lotte" - where a Sabbath-type riff is mixed with elements of Bavarian folk and yodeling. Original issue in DDR only. I guess this is one of those with label as shown here, thick vinyl and thin glossy cover. (BÅC*) (GÖXÄ*) (ÄMY*)
