JEFFERSON AIRPLANE/BARK FTR 1001 (-71) US

Their sixth album and first with a new outfit, following founding member Marty Balin quitting dissatisfied with the band's increasingly drug drenched direction, the inclusion of violininst Papa John Creach and drummer Joey Covington replacing Spencer Dryden. According to later interwievs with then members the band felt lost after Balin's walkout, the recordings almost fell apart without him and there was confusion about which way to go. Anyway they seem to have pulled it together and, at least to my taste, produced yet another top album. Released to mixed rewievs and managing #11 on Billboard, while the spawned "Pretty As You Feel" 45 landed at #60. Of course we didn't know anything about that background in the rather secluded Uppsala seventies student world where I camped at the time. The gang really loved it, we played it at parties and discos but also dug deep and analyzed every single part. So for me it's not only good music, but also comes with tons of memories attached. Though even without reminiscing those days there are many tracks here that must be regarded as contemporary classics. "Feel So Good" so loving it will make you feel even better, "Pretty As You Feel" a cool and valuable lesson, "Thunk" beautiful a-capella, "War Movie" and "When The Earth Moves Again" combining raw and catchy in the best possible way. I'm still touched. Issued and reissued on vinyl and CD all over the world through the years, also cassette and 8-track. Argentine mono on RCA (AVL 4057) was a rather bad fold (see earlier post). Japan 2005 CD in paper sleeve on BMG (BVCM 37630). Premiere US had label as shown here with laminated cover and brown inner sleeve encased in a brown picture/credit paper bag with lyric/bag advisal insert...all then sealed in printed plastic wrapper.
