CREAM/GOODBYE 583 053 (-69) UK
I may be whipped for saying this, but the planned grande finale for one of the sixties greatest groups turned out almost pathetic. As the story goes all was set for an album like Wheels Of Fire - one LP with live material and one with freshly written studio material - but since the band already decided to quit they had problem coming up with new material and probably more interested in coming collaborations than doing something high quality with the old mates. This was the final result - three live tracks recorded at Los Angeles Forum during the Goodbye-tour and three new studio ones. The live takes have about the same quality as the ones on Wheels Of Fire. The studio takes are all very good. "Badge" (by Clapton and George Harrison) is an odd melodic piece, wich also reached #18 in UK and #60 in US as '45. "Doing That Scrapyard Thing" (by Bruce and Pete Brown) is somewhat whimsical, but points forward to Bruce's classic solo debute "Songs For A Taylor" later same year. Ginger Bakers contribution "What A Bringdown" is the most psychedelic and a reminder of the "Disraeli Gears" days. Felix Pappalardi participates in all three on different instruments and George Harrison (under pseudonym) plays guitar on "Badge". So far so good - but it was too little too soon. I wish they could have held out, making a full album with new studio tracks. That would have been a more worthy goodbye. It sold surprisingly well - #1 in UK, #2 in US and top ten in a number of other countries. Earliest US on ATCO "purple and tan" label (SD 7001). First UK with label as shown here and matt fold/out cover. (LYBÖ*)(CÄRÄ*)
